Cariri (from the name of an ancient Indian tribe) is the Southernmost part of Ceará. It actually extends beyond the border to the neighbouring states of Piauí and Pernambuco. The area is famous for its agricultural produce, handicraft, and culture. Many Cearense poets, authors and musicians come from here. Cariri is also famous for Padre Cícero, a "renegade" priest who lived in Juazeiro do Norte in the early XXth century. After being ousted from the Catholic church, he was recently rehabilitated when the Vatican decided to canonize him. In fact, the local population had already made him a holy person long before the Church's intervention. Besides, hundreds of thousands of people from the most distant place in the whole Nordeste swarm to Juazeiro several times a year for pilgrimages.
