Serra is Portuguese for mountain. When people talk about the serra in Fortaleza, they usually mean the mountain just South of the city, culminating at 1,500 meters. Depending on the place you're going to, you call it "Serra de Pacotí", "Serra de Guaramiranga", "Serra de Baturité", but it's really the same mountain. Many middle-class Fortalezenses enjoy spending the week-end here, as the altitude offers cooler temperatures, a welcome change in the dry season. The area is also ideal for growing fruit-trees and vegetables. |
