Chronic droughts, chronic poverty, chronic religion. No wonder Canindé is a popular place for pilgrimages. Promise-payers come here to pray Saint Francis for recovering from a disease, getting a job or marrying that girl... Save for a few restaurants, most businesses around the cathedral are shops selling religious articles where people dressed in brown habits buy pious pictures as souvenirs. The ex-voto room, in a low building at the back of the cathedral is worth visiting. Believers obviously become extremely creative when it comes to prove Saint Francis how grateful they are: countless poems and prayers written on a panel, hundreds of wooden sculptures representing all parts of the human body, thousands of pictures and drawing, even model houses and lorries! |
